Venetian Plaster

Timeless luxury and depth

Hand-applied in multiple fine layers for a rich, luminous finish. Natural lime, breathable and durable—from grand period properties to modern apartments.

What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster is a decorative wall finish made from slaked lime and marble dust, applied by hand in multiple thin layers and polished to a smooth, luminous surface. The technique originated in Italy and has been used for centuries in palaces, churches and luxury interiors. Today it is prized across Ireland for its ability to bring warmth, texture and a sense of timeless luxury to both period properties and contemporary spaces.

Through a meticulous layering process of marble dust and lime putty, this exquisite finish creates a luminous surface that captures and reflects light from within. Available in a spectrum of finishes — from subtle matte to high-gloss mirror effects — its enduring nature develops a natural patina over time that becomes more beautiful with age.

Types of Venetian plaster

Marmorino

A classic Italian finish with a smooth, stone-like texture. Marmorino can be polished to a soft sheen or left with a natural matte surface. Its depth and movement make it a favourite for feature walls in Dublin homes and commercial interiors.

Stucco veneziano

The most refined Venetian plaster technique, polished to a high gloss that resembles marble. Multiple translucent layers create extraordinary depth and luminosity — a statement finish for luxury residential and hospitality projects across Ireland.

Limewash

A softer, more organic finish with a chalky, lived-in quality. Limewash is breathable and naturally antimicrobial, making it well suited to older Irish properties where moisture regulation is important. It ages beautifully and can be easily refreshed.

Where it works best

Venetian plaster is a remarkably practical wall finish. Natural lime is inherently breathable and moisture-regulating, making it an excellent choice for bathrooms and kitchens — it helps prevent condensation and discourages mould growth. It is also highly durable, developing a harder surface over time as the lime continues to cure. For homeowners seeking a finish that combines artisan craftsmanship with lasting performance, Venetian plaster offers the perfect balance of form and function.

Very. Lime plaster actually hardens over time as it continues to cure, developing a tougher surface year after year. With normal care, a venetian plaster finish will last decades. Minor marks can often be buffed out or touched up.

When applied over a properly prepared substrate, venetian plaster is resistant to cracking. The lime base has natural flexibility. We always assess the condition of your walls before starting and carry out any necessary preparation.

Venetian plaster can be tinted to virtually any colour — from soft whites and warm neutrals to deep charcoals and rich jewel tones. The finish can be polished to a high gloss, left with a soft matte, or anything in between.

Yes. We're based in Dublin but apply venetian plaster across Ireland — including Cork, Galway, Limerick and beyond. Travel is included in our quotation.
